We are blessed to have a great heritage handed down to us by great men like George Washington. Here are some quotes attributed to him that reflect his views on two very important subjects:
On Guns:
"Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurrences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good."
On God:
" It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”
"To the distinguished character of patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian." [May 2, 1778, at Valley Forge]
Does anyone still identify with him? Leave us a comment and have a wonderful 4th of July weekend.
Happy Fourth of July to the whole family. This is a great post Mr. Neely. I have grown to appreciate our freedom more and more. Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of when my cousin Jacob went home to be with the Lord. I am very thankful for all the sacrifices made by the men who have died and by the men who are currently serving in the military.
Great post! There is a lot of wisdom in what George Washington said in those quotes.
We’re enjoying our freedom, listening to our new favorite patriotic CD! Patriot’s Honor still brings the lump in the throat, and tears in the eyes.
As Katrina said, we all hope that your rememberances are good ones as you celebrate this Independence Day!
We love y’all, and appreciate your example(s) to all of us!
Those are excellent quotes!
They come from a man who understood government–and self-government. Washington was a giant in every sense of the word. He could have done as he pleased. Yet his conduct was governed by Scripture, conscience, and the best interests of those he served and protected.
By following his example, we the people, really, are the only ones who can guarantee that guns remain in the hands of the self-governed.
George Washington sure hit a bull’s eye there!
